Bodies closer than 20 km in the two conventions are left out. The Sun never appears here: it has no ecliptic latitude, so both conventions agree with it to the thousandth of a degree, which is the check that the two calculations are sound.

How This Works

  1. 1.Your local clock time is converted to universal time using the birth city and the summer-time box. That is the only job the birth city does.
  2. 2.Each body is placed by right ascension and declination — including its ecliptic latitude, which is why the Moon and Pluto lines here sit where they do.
  3. 3.The Midheaven line is the meridian where the body was culminating; the Imum Coeli line is 180 degrees opposite. Both are straight.
  4. 4.The rising and setting lines solve the horizon equation for every latitude, which is why they curve and why they stop where the body turns circumpolar.
  5. 5.Distances are measured east to west along each city's own parallel, the convention the tradition's mile-orbs assume.

What an Astrocartography Map Actually Draws

An astrocartography calculator does not know where you were born. Type Lagos, type Lisbon, leave the clock alone, and every one of the forty lines comes back on the same meridian to the last decimal. That surprises people, understandably — every form on the internet asks for a birth city as though it changed the answer. It changes the time zone. Nothing else. What the map is actually a picture of is a single minute of universal time, and once you can see that, most of the strange claims made about these lines start to sort themselves into the ones worth testing and the ones that were never claims at all.

The Map Never Asked Where You Were Born

Here is the mechanism, and it is short. A Midheaven line is the meridian where a planet was culminating at your birth moment: take the planet's right ascension, subtract Greenwich sidereal time, and that is the longitude. A rising line solves the horizon equation for each latitude in turn. Neither calculation contains a birth latitude or a birth longitude, because neither needs one. Two babies delivered in the same minute in Tokyo and in Toronto get byte-identical maps.

This is exactly the opposite of how the rest of a birth chart behaves. Move the delivery room and the Ascendant moves, the house cusps move, and — as the planet in house calculator shows in some detail — five reputable house systems will then argue about roughly two thirds of your placements. None of that reaches the lines. Relocating never rewrites your natal birth chart; astrocartography is a claim about which part of an unchanged chart a place happens to emphasise.

Your Sun Line Is Wherever It Was Midday

Test the engine against something you can check without any astrology at all. The Sun is on the Midheaven exactly when it is local noon, so a person's Sun Midheaven line has to be the noon meridian of their birth minute. Run that comparison over 400 random charts and the worst disagreement is zero — not small, zero, because the two are the same quantity written two ways. The Imum Coeli line is the midnight meridian. At the equator the rising and setting lines are the sunrise and sunset terminator.

The default chart loaded above is 4 May 1989, seven in the morning, London, which was British Summer Time, so six o'clock universal. Six hours before Greenwich noon puts midday about ninety degrees east, and the Sun Midheaven line lands at 89.2°E — 85 km from Kolkata. Not a coincidence, and not a result: it is the definition of the hour. The same identity is why the Sun line barely moves between generations. Take any calendar date and clock time, run it for every year from 1960 to 2020, and the Sun's line drifts a total of 0.09° across the whole span, about ten kilometres.

Four Minutes of Clock Error Moves Every Line 112 Kilometres

Because the map is a picture of the clock, changing the clock rotates the map. Earth turns 15.0411 degrees of sidereal longitude an hour, and each planet claws back a little of that with its own motion, so the drift is nearly but not quite uniform:

The Sun sits at exactly 15.0000 because that number is what an hour means. Everything else is off it by a fraction, and only the Moon is off it enough to notice — 0.55 degrees an hour slower than Pluto. So the whole pattern translates about 27 times faster than it deforms. Four minutes of doubt about your birth certificate slides every line 112 kilometres at the equator and 69at London's latitude. Across 7,500 city-and-chart pairs the line nearest a given city stops being that line after a median of 21 minutes of shift, and 26.33% of the time within ten. On the default chart above, London is 203 km from the Jupiter rising line as entered. Wind the clock back fifteen minutes and it is 57 km from it. Wind it forward fifteen and London is sitting on the Pluto setting line, two kilometres away.

At 700 Miles, Nearly Everyone Is on a Line

Ask an astrocartographer how close counts and the usual answer is 700 miles, about 1,126 kilometres. That orb is enormous. Ten bodies on four angles give forty lines, and twenty of them are meridians spaced a mean 18 degrees apart, so a band 700 miles either side of each one covers more than the gap between them. Measured over 111,000 city-and-chart combinations:

At the traditional orb, 96.31% of the time a city is on a line and the average count is 3.04 lines at once. Only 3.64% of city-charts come back clean. Being on a line, at that width, is not information — it is the default state of the planet. Tighten to 200 km and the hit rate falls to 41.88%, which is where the finding starts costing something to make. The median distance from any city to its nearest line is 255 km, with a tenth of cases inside 39 km and a tenth beyond 814.

Why Each Planet's Lines Pinch Shut at Two Latitudes

Look at any one planet on the map and its four lines form a closed shape rather than four separate strokes. That is not a drawing choice. A body with declination δ is circumpolar above latitude 90 − |δ|, and a circumpolar body never crosses the horizon, so it has no rising line up there. At exactly that latitude the rising and setting curves converge and touch the Imum Coeli meridian; at the mirror latitude in the other hemisphere they converge on the Midheaven meridian. Every planet's pair of curves is one loop pinned at two points.

Below 60° latitude all forty lines exist for every chart. Then they start going missing: 39.11 of 40 at 66°, 33.42 at 70°, and 29.09 by 75°. Tromso is in the city list above precisely so you can watch it happen. This is a different failure from the one the chart ruler calculator documents, where six signs stop rising above the Arctic Circle — here it is individual bodies dropping out depending on where their declination happens to be that week.

Ten Thousand Kilometres With Nothing on Them

Twenty meridians across 360 degrees would sit 18 degrees apart if they were evenly spread. They never are. The largest stretch of longitude with no Midheaven or Imum Coeli line on it averages 54.83 degrees and has run as wide as 115.77. On the default chart the empty stretch is 98 degrees — from Saturn's Imum Coeli line at 152.8°E all the way to the Moon's at 109.2°W. Switch every body on in the map above and you can see it: the entire Pacific with nothing in it.

The obvious explanation is planetary crowding, and the obvious explanation is wrong. Compare real charts against 10 randomly placed antipodal pairs of meridians and the random version gives 52.84 degrees against the real 54.83 — a ratio of 1.04, which is nothing. The lumpiness comes from the fact that every line has an exact opposite, not from any bunching of planets. Test it against 20 uniformly random meridians instead and you get 64.63 degrees, which would have told you real charts are unusually even. Pick the wrong control and the same data supports the opposite conclusion.

There is real crowding, and it lives somewhere else. Mercury never strays more than about 28 degrees from the Sun and Venus never more than 47, so their Midheaven lines are chained to the Sun's. Measured across 3,000 charts, those three lines span an average of 36.05 degrees and have never once spanned more than 73.07. Three of your ten bodies always huddle in one time-of-day neighbourhood, and the two nearest lines on a chart are a mean 1.678 degrees apart, under 200 kilometres at the equator.

Which of Your Two Moon Lines Is the Real One?

This is the reason two astrocartography sites can hand you different maps from the same birth data, and almost nobody says it out loud. A rising line can mean two things. It can mean the place where the planet's body came up over the horizon, or the place where the planet's zodiac degree was rising — where it was the Ascendant. Those agree only for a body sitting exactly on the ecliptic. Everything else sits off it, and the gap opens with latitude:

The Sun row is the control and it is the whole argument. The Sun has no ecliptic latitude, so the two definitions must agree exactly, and they do — 0.00 at every latitude tested, which is what tells you both calculations are sound rather than both being broken in the same direction. For the Moon at 55 degrees the two conventions average 7.58 degrees of longitude apart, which is 484 kilometres of ground, and on individual charts it has run past 26 degrees. Reykjavik Sits on More Lines Than Quito, and It Isn't Fate

Meridians converge toward the poles. A degree of longitude is 111 kilometres at the equator and 49 at Reykjavik, so the same 300-kilometre orb reaches more than twice as far in longitude up there. High-latitude cities are on more lines than tropical ones, every chart, for everyone:

Real charts climb 1.55 times from the tropical band to the polar one. Forty randomly thrown meridians climb 1.66 times over the same cities. Take the control away and this reads as an astrological fact about the north; leave it in and it is trigonometry. Any list of "the most astrologically activated cities" that has not corrected for this is really a list of cities at high latitude.

What Each of the Four Angles Actually Changes

The planet tells you what kind of energy a place is supposed to carry. The angle tells you where in your life it turns up, and the four are genuinely different readings rather than four intensities of one:

  • Midheaven (MC), culminating The planet stands at the top of the sky. Traditionally the loudest of the four: whatever it touches becomes the thing people here know you for, whether or not you meant it to.
  • Imum Coeli (IC), at the nadir The planet sits under your feet at midnight. Read it as the private half of the same story — the house, the family, the version of you that never makes it into the room.
  • Ascendant (ASC), rising The planet is coming up over the eastern horizon. This is the angle that alters how you look to strangers before you have opened your mouth.
  • Descendant (DSC), setting The planet is going down in the west. Read it as the people the place hands you — who turns up, what kind of deal gets offered, who picks a fight.

Midheaven and Imum Coeli lines always come in exact opposite pairs, so if a place is on your Venus Midheaven line, the antipode is on your Venus Imum Coeli line. Rising and setting behave the same way. That is worth remembering when a report tells you a country is "your Saturn territory" — somewhere on the other side of the world is the same Saturn wearing the opposite face.

Reading a Line Without Booking a Flight

The honest position is that nobody has shown these lines do anything, and the arithmetic above is a decent reason to hold them loosely. What the technique is genuinely useful for is structuring a decision you were making anyway. So: set the orb to 200 kilometres rather than 700, and read the two or three lines that survive. Check a place you have already lived before you check a place you have not — if the line over the city where you spent a miserable decade reads like a holiday brochure, you have learned something useful about the method. Visit before you move, on the same principle you would apply to any other advice that costs money to follow.

And do not let a Saturn line veto a job offer. Everyone has four of them and they cross the inhabited world as thoroughly as anyone else's. No, and the arithmetic is the reason. Everybody has four Saturn lines and they cross the inhabited world in the same way everyone else's do, so avoiding Saturn territory would rule out a fair share of the planet on no evidence. Traditional readings frame Saturn lines as demanding rather than dangerous, and plenty of astrologers deliberately choose one when they want a place that makes them work.
Then the map slides. Every line moves west at very close to 15 degrees of longitude per hour of clock error, which is 27.9 kilometres per minute at the equator and 17.4 at London's latitude. Four minutes of doubt is 112 kilometres at the equator. Measured over 7,500 city-and-chart pairs, the nearest line to a city changes identity after a median of only 21 minutes of shift, so with an unknown birth time you have a map of a day, not of a moment.
Because the map is a picture of the clock. Everything on it is computed from the birth instant in universal time and nothing else, so two babies born eight hours apart on the same date have the same pattern rotated 120 degrees around the globe. Lines that ran through India for the first one run through the Atlantic for the second.

A paran is a latitude where two planets hit angles at the same moment, so it shows up as a horizontal band rather than a line. This calculator plots the forty angular lines and leaves parans out, because a paran band is only meaningful once you already trust the lines that generate it. Read the lines first and treat the crossings you can see on the map as the practical version of the same idea.
