What kind of relationship is this?

Which one are you?

The percentages don't move. What the pairing asks of you does — and this is the side whose notes get highlighted in the exercise below.

Both sides · Romance

Ninety-three per cent — Sagittarius’s best score with anyone, and joint-best for Leo alongside Aries. Leo is the only sign of the twelve whose top figure is held by two partners rather than one, and both claimants are its own trine. The geometry is the easy part: Leo at 120–150° and Sagittarius at 240–270°, exactly 120° apart, same element, no friction in the aspect at all. The interesting part is the rulers. The Sun rules Leo and Jupiter rules Sagittarius, and those two bodies hold 99.96% of the mass of the solar system between them. They are also the only pair in it where one genuinely moves the other: the point everything orbits — the barycentre — sits 742,000 km from the Sun’s centre, which is 1.067 solar radii, just outside the Sun’s own surface. Jupiter put it there. No other planet can. And it manages it not by being heavy, because it is a thousandth of the Sun, but by being 778 million kilometres away.

Love

95%

The highest love figure available to any Fire pairing, and joint second on the whole site behind Cancer and Scorpio at 97. Two signs whose rulers are the Sun and the greater benefic, neither of which knows how to give in small amounts.

Friendship

92%

Strong, and quietly the most durable thing here. This is the one axis that barely moves between contexts on this page — six points of range against fifteen for love. Whatever else happens, you will still like each other.

Communication

88%

Sagittarius’s personal maximum on this axis, with nobody else on the wheel above 85. Worth knowing: Sagittarius has the joint-lowest average communication score of any sign, so this is the most articulate version of itself that this sign has.

Trust

83%

Twelve points under love, which is the widest gap of that shape among all pairings scoring 90 or better. Not fidelity. Timing. One of you states a direction and the other hears a commitment with a clock in it.

The Barycentre

Build one year of this relationship. Tap a month to cycle it: ordinary, away, or an occasion that needs both of you in the room. It is a ring rather than a line, because a year comes round — December sits next to January and the model counts it that way. Watch where the centre of the system ends up. There is no budget here to spend. There is a shape.

A Flat Year

155,190 years, 29.2% — the single most common outcome on the entire board.

Nothing went far and not much got marked. This is where a year lands when nobody decided anything, and it is the largest cell of the nine by a clear margin, which is worth sitting with: the default is not disaster, the default is inertia. For this specific pairing that matters more than it would for most, because neither sign has a mechanism for ranking one option over another. Leo and Sagittarius are two of only four signs in which no planet is exalted and none is in fall. Nothing gets promoted and nothing gets demoted, so two decent options can sit on the table for a year and a half while the calendar quietly picks for you.

♌ Leo

You have been waiting to be asked. It is a completely reasonable position and it produces nothing, because the other person in this relationship is not withholding an invitation, they genuinely have not registered that one is owed.

♐ Sagittarius

You have been waiting to be free. Also reasonable, also produces nothing, and in your case the freedom was never being withheld either — you simply never named a date, and an undated intention cannot be agreed to.

The one lever

Two decisions, made this month, both with dates: one journey and one occasion. This cell is the site of most of the wasted years in this pairing and it is not defended by anything. Nobody is even holding the door.

Checked across all 531,441 possible years: six of the nine outcomes can never lift the centre off the Sun, no matter what you add — every short-hops year and every no-orbit year is stuck inside the body. Both signs' instinctive arrangements land in no orbit, for opposite reasons. And the best cell is 6.3% of the years anybody would realistically build, with 78% of them requiring one unbroken journey.

Five collisions, and the sentence that arrived instead

Nobody lies in any of these. Jupiter states a direction and the Sun hears a time, so almost every Leo–Sagittarius argument has two honest sentences in it that were never the same sentence. Open one to see both sides, what was said, what was heard, and the fix.

How This Works

  1. 1.The 93% starts with geometry. Leo occupies 120–150° of the zodiac and Sagittarius 240–270°, which is exactly 120° apart — a trine, inside one element. Then the modalities set the texture: Fixed plus Mutable means one of you holds the position and the other keeps finding the next one, and this is the Fire leg with no Cardinal sign in it at all.
  2. 2.The overall figure is notthe average of the four bars. It is the synastry score — element, modality, aspect, and how each sign's ruler behaves in the other sign. The bars read four separate functions, which is why 93% sits above an axis average of 89.5%.
  3. 3.Switching the relationship type moves the numbers, and this page has a signature no other does: romance and friendship tie at 93%, the only tied best context in the category. Love is the volatile axis here, swinging fifteen points from 95 down to 80, while friendship moves six. On most pages the volatile axis is trust.
  4. 4.Choosing a side never changes a score. Compatibility is symmetric; living inside it is not. The percentages hold, and the written verdict, the highlighted notes in the exercise and the flashpoint panels all switch to your side of it.
  5. 5.In The Barycentre, time away is worth what its shapeis worth, not what its length is worth — journey value is the sum of the squares of the unbroken runs, so six months taken in one go scores 100 and the same six months as six separate weekends scores 19. The centre's position is the reach reading in solar radii, calibrated so that the Sun's surface sits at 1.00 and the real Sun–Jupiter figure of 1.067 falls just past it. Six of the nine outcomes can never reach that line.

Leo and Sagittarius Compatibility: 93%, and the Sun Is Not at the Centre

Leo and Sagittarius compatibility scores 93% here, and the fastest way into what that number actually means is a fact about the Sun that sounds like a mistake. The Sun is not at the centre of the solar system. The point everything orbits sits about 742,000 kilometres from the Sun's core — which is 1.067 times the Sun's own radius, so it is not inside the Sun at all. It is out in open space. One planet put it there, and that planet is Jupiter, the ruler of Sagittarius.

The Sun Is Not at the Centre, and Jupiter Is Why

Run the arithmetic and it is not close. Jupiter is roughly one 1,048th of the Sun's mass — a rounding error, on its own — and it still drags the barycentre of the whole system out past the solar surface, where it stays, wobbling between 1.015 and 1.119 solar radii as Jupiter runs through its slightly eccentric 11.86-year orbit. No other planet manages it. Saturn, the next heaviest, gets the figure to 0.588 on its own: well inside. Neptune reaches 0.334, Uranus 0.180, and Earth manages 0.0006. NASA's figures for Jupiter give the orbit as 778 million kilometres and the mass as 1.898 × 1027 kg, which is where all of this comes from.

So exactly one body in the solar system can move the Sun off its own centre. It happens to rule Sagittarius, and the sign it moves happens to be ruled by the Sun. Only two of the 66 sign pairs put those two rulers together at all — this one and Leo with Pisces, under the traditional scheme where Jupiter rules both — and only one of them is a trine.

Distance Does the Work, Not Devotion

Here is the part that reverses everything you have read about this pairing. Jupiter does not move the Sun by being big. It moves the Sun by being far away. The barycentre sits at the orbital distance multiplied by the mass ratio, so the distance is doing most of the lifting — and the threshold works out at about 4.88 AU. Below that, the centre of mass stays buried inside the Sun. Jupiter orbits at 5.20 AU. It clears the line by roughly six and a half per cent, and not by more.

Take that same Jupiter and park it where Earth is, at 1 AU, and the figure collapses to 0.205 solar radii. Deep inside the body. No visible effect at all. Same planet, same mass, close enough to see — and it moves nothing.

That is the whole relationship, and it is the single most counterintuitive thing about it. Every guide to this pairing tells the Leo that the Sagittarius needs freedom and frames it as a concession, something a generous partner tolerates. The geometry says the opposite. The leaving is not the cost of this relationship. It is the mechanism. A Sagittarius who never goes anywhere does not become more available to a Leo — they become inert, and the Leo, without noticing, stops being moved by anything.

Where Is the Sun Actually Happiest?

Traditional astrology has a scheme called the planetary joys — the house in which each of the seven classical planets is most itself, independent of sign. It is older than the dignity tables most modern readers know, and it says something about this pairing that the dignity tables cannot.

Mercury joys in the first house, the Moon in the third, Venus in the fifth, Mars in the sixth, Saturn in the twelfth. The Sun joys in the ninth. In the natural wheel, the ninth house is Sagittarius — long journeys, foreign countries, the thing believed in rather than owned. The Sun's happiest position is not the fifth house, its own sign's territory, where the joy belongs to Venus. It is on Sagittarius's ground.

Now check the other side, because it is the reason trust scores 83 here. Jupiter's joy is the eleventh house: friends, allies, the wider company. The eleventh is Aquarius in the natural wheel, and Aquarius sits directly across the zodiac from Leo. So Sagittarius's ruler is at its best in the one house on the wheel opposite Leo's sign. Your partner is not drifting away from you at the party. They are drifting toward the place their ruler enjoys most, and that place is structurally on the far side of yours.

Leo Cannot Name a Favourite, and Nor Can Fire

Something odd turns up when you sort our whole table. Every sign on the wheel has one clear best match — Cancer has Scorpio at 94, Gemini has Libra at 93, Taurus has Virgo at 92. Every sign except one. Leo's top figure is 93 and it is held by two partners at once: Aries and Sagittarius, tied exactly. Leo is the only sign of the twelve without a single best match.

The pattern repeats one level up. Sort each element's three same-element legs and three of them come out cleanly ordered — Water runs 94, 93, 92; Air runs 93, 91, 90; Earth runs 92, 91, 90. Fire runs 93, 93, 90. It is the only trine on the wheel that refuses to rank itself, and the tie is between this pairing and Aries–Leo, with Leo in both.

There is a third asymmetry worth knowing before you read anything else about this match. Sagittarius rates Leo first outright on four of the five axes we score — overall, love, communication and trust. Leo can only rate Sagittarius first outright on one, friendship, at 92. In plain terms: the partner who leaves has already decided, and the partner who stays has not. That is almost exactly backwards from how this pairing gets written up everywhere else.

Twelve Points Between Love and Trust

Love scores 95 here and trust scores 83. Twelve points, and among every pairing on this site rating 90 or above, no other separates those two numbers by more than ten. It is the widest love-over-trust gap in the entire top tier, and it is worth being exact about what it measures, because it is not what people assume.

It is not fidelity. Sagittarius's reputation there is mostly a slander written by people who mistook restlessness for appetite. What the gap measures is the distance between a stated direction and a stated time. Jupiter is the planet of expansion, and expansion has no clock in it — we'll do it, definitely, this year is, to a Sagittarius, a complete and sincere sentence. The Sun runs on a fixed cycle: it never changes speed by more than a few per cent and it has never once reversed. A Leo hears that sentence and starts a clock, because that is what a Leo does with a promise.

Neither of you is misbehaving. One of you is speaking in directions and the other is listening in times, and after four years the Leo has a list of dates that quietly went past. That list is the whole 83.

Nothing in This Pairing Outranks Anything Else

Seven signs on the wheel hold a planetary exaltation. Seven hold a fall. Between them they account for eight signs, which leaves exactly four holding neither: Gemini, Leo, Sagittarius and Aquarius. Nothing is promoted in these signs and nothing is demoted.

Two of those four are sitting in this relationship, and there is a structure underneath it that is rarely pointed out. Those four signs are the third, fifth, ninth and eleventh of the natural wheel — and those are precisely the houses where the Moon, Venus, the Sun and Jupiter take their joys. The four non-malefics. The remaining three joys, Mercury in the first, Mars in the sixth and Saturn in the twelfth, all land in signs that carry both an exaltation and a fall.

What that produces day to day is a couple with no native instinct for this outranks that. Two good options can sit on the table for eighteen months. Both of you will describe yourselves as easygoing about it and both of you will be telling the truth, and meanwhile the calendar makes the decision by default. The only other trine on the wheel built from two rank-free signs is Gemini and Aquarius, which has the same problem in Air: nothing there initiates, and nothing here ranks.

Fire Is the Only Element That Wins No Category

Across all 66 combinations, each of the four axis maximums belongs to a same-element pairing — and Fire holds none of them. It is second on all five.

Water owns love. Air owns the two axes that measure being in the same room. Earth owns trust. Fire is permanently the runner-up, and this pairing is its best shot at three of the five. That is not a small consolation prize — 95 on love is a very high number in absolute terms — but it does explain something about the reputation. Fire pairings are famous and none of them is a record-holder.

Five Months, Not Five Weekends

The exercise above is not decorative and this is the finding I would most want a Leo to read. In the model, time away is scored by the square of each unbroken stretch, which means the same six months apart produce wildly different results depending on shape:

Same six months away, arranged asReachWhere the centre lands
One six-month journey1001.62 R☉ — clear of the surface
Two three-month journeys580.94 R☉ — still inside
Three two-month journeys380.61 R☉ — nowhere near
Six separate months190.31 R☉ — no effect at all

A fivefold difference, from shape alone, with the total time apart held constant. And it cuts the other way too: past seven months the reading falls off, because an orbit that does not come round is not an orbit. Nine months away scores about the same as two.

The practical translation is blunt. If one of you travels for work, fight for the long posting and refuse the endless short trips, even though the short trips look more considerate on paper. Restlessness is the specifically Sagittarian failure and it is the one this sign is never warned about — constant movement that never gets far enough out to move anything.

Name the Hour, Then Book the Journey

Sagittarius: say the hour, not the intention.Every one of this pairing's twelve trust points lives in the gap between I wouldn't miss it and I will be there at seven. You are not being asked for a plan or a personality change. You are being asked for one number, and it costs you nothing you value.

Leo: stop asking for presence and start asking for arrivals. Three or four dates a year, named in January, non-negotiable in October. That request is far smaller than the one you have been making without saying it, and it is the one that can actually be kept. Everything in between is theirs.

Both: put one long thing in the year and three clean occasions around it. Not next to it — the model docks an occasion by more than half when travel sits beside it, and so does real life, because the week before a departure is not an evening, it is packing.

And check where Jupiter actually sits in both charts. Sun signs will not tell you this. A Jupiter in the fourth house behaves nothing like a Jupiter in the ninth, and on this specific pairing that placement decides whether the leaving is a five-month posting or a Tuesday evening class. A full birth chart will place both bodies, and if either of you has Jupiter angular, this relationship has a spine that no Sun-sign reading will ever show you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Because Jupiter measures a journey by where it went, not by what it left behind. A Sagittarius returning from three months away has genuinely been thinking about you the entire time and has genuinely not been tracking the calendar you were living in. It is not indifference and it is not a test. Say the specific thing that happened while they were gone, in one sentence, on the first evening — they will take it seriously the moment it exists as information rather than as mood.
It is Sagittarius's best match outright, at 93%, and it ties for Leo's best with Aries at the same figure. That tie is unusual: Leo is the only sign of the twelve whose top score is held by two partners rather than one. The site maximum belongs to Cancer and Scorpio at 94% with a 97% love axis, so this is joint fourth overall — and its 95% love score is the highest available to any Fire pairing.
Trust is the weak axis at 83%, twelve points below the 95% love score. That is the widest love-over-trust gap of any pairing on this site scoring 90% or above; the next widest is ten. It is almost never about fidelity. It is about the difference between a stated direction and a stated time — Sagittarius says what will happen and Leo hears when it will happen, and the gap between those two sentences is where every argument in this relationship starts.
Because a Leo occasion is not a gathering, it is a specific person being seen by a specific other person. Jupiter's traditional joy is the eleventh house — friends, groups, the wider company — so a Sagittarius at a party moves outward and counts the night a success by how many people it reached. Both readings of the evening are honest. Agree in advance on one fifteen-minute window that belongs to the two of you and the entire problem disappears.
The engine here is Fixed Fire meeting Mutable Fire rather than gender, so it plays the same in either arrangement. One of you holds a position and the other keeps finding the next one, and the friction is always about timing rather than affection. The one real asymmetry is preference: Sagittarius ranks Leo first on four of the five axes we score, while Leo has a tied first choice, so the sign that leaves is usually the one who has already decided.
In our model a single journey peaks in value at about five to six months and then collapses fast — past seven the score falls away because an orbit has to close to be an orbit. The more useful finding is about shape rather than length. The same six months away is worth roughly five times more as one continuous journey than as six scattered weekends, because the scattered version never gets far enough out to move anything and never fully returns either.
Nothing gets ranked. Neither sign holds an exaltation or a fall, which in practice means neither has an instinct for saying this outranks that — so two good options sit on the table indefinitely and the calendar decides instead of either of you. Watch for the year in which nobody left and nothing was marked. That arrangement is the most common single outcome in our own exercise and it is where this pairing quietly stops moving.
It scores 86% for work against 93% for dating, which is respectable and not the pairing's best setting. A job supplies both of the things this couple lacks at home — an audience for Leo and a horizon for Sagittarius — but it also requires somebody to state the number and hold it, which is the one move neither sign makes naturally. Put a third person in charge of deadlines and money and the arrangement runs extremely well.
