A Quarter of Us Have a Mercury the Sun Burned Up
A Mercury sign calculator hands you a sign, and for slightly over half the people who use one, that sign is the sign they already knew — their Sun sign, returned to them with a different planet's name on it. The number is 50.98% of all birth dates between 1930 and 2029. That is not a flaw in the calculators. It is a fact about Mercury, and once you take it seriously it changes what the interesting question is.

Half of You Already Knew Your Mercury Sign
Mercury orbits inside us, tight to the Sun. From where we stand it never gets further than about 28° away — measured across the last century, its greatest elongations run from 17.84° to 27.79°, and never once fall outside that. Twenty-eight degrees is less than a sign. So your Mercury is in your Sun sign, or the one before it, or the one after it, and there is no fourth option.
The measured split across 36,525 birth dates: same sign 50.98%, one sign ahead 24.56%, one sign behind 24.46%. The two off-centre cases come out almost exactly equal, which is a decent sign the arithmetic is honest.
That three-sign table is well covered elsewhere on this site — the Virgo man profile uses it to explain why three men with the same Sun sign can deliver the same standard in three unrecognisably different ways, and the Gemini man profile does the same from the other side. Both are guessing at Mercury from a Sun sign, which is a useful parlour trick when you have no birth data. It is beside the point on a page that just computed the thing outright.
So here is the question worth asking instead. Mercury is never far from the Sun. How close was it? Because that number is not a footnote — in traditional practice it is the difference between a planet that can speak and one that cannot.
Combust: A Quarter of Us Have It, Nobody Mentions It
A planet within about 8.5° of the Sun is combust. Burned up. The image is literal: at that distance you physically cannot see it, because it rises and sets inside the daylight. Medieval texts treat combustion as one of the heaviest afflictions a chart can carry, and for most planets they are describing something genuinely uncommon.
Mercury is combust 25.03% of the time. One birth in four.
That figure is an exact time fraction rather than an estimate — every window edge in this article was solved by bisection, not read off a sampling grid, which is why the burn times on the tool above are quoted to the minute. And 25% is a strange number for a rare affliction. It is the reason combustion has quietly vanished from modern Mercury reports: a condition that applies to a quarter of your readers is awkward to present as a warning, so it gets dropped, and what remains is the sign nobody needed telling.
Push the threshold out to 15°, the classical “under the beams” limit, and the figure hits 47.30%. Coin-flip odds that your Mercury was somewhere in the Sun's glow when you were born.
Run the Same Test on Five Planets
A number on its own proves nothing, so the tool runs the identical test on four other planets using the same functions and the same century. This is the whole argument, and it is the reason the chart in the results panel has five rows instead of one.

The ladder falls in lockstep with the leash. Mercury is burned 4.84 times as often as Saturn, and nothing about the nature of Mercury explains that — the cause is that a planet trapped inside 28° runs into the Sun 6.31 times a year while Saturn manages it once. The tighter the leash, the more often the fire.
Now read the last column, because the same cap produces the exact opposite result there. Cazimi — a planet inside 17 arcminutes of the Sun's dead centre, closer than the Sun's own apparent width — is the single strongest condition traditional astrology recognises. The planet is not burned; it is in the heart of the king, and it gains everything. And Mercury reaches it 4.74 times as often as Saturn does, for precisely the same reason.
One constraint, two opposite consequences. Mercury is the planet the Sun destroys most often and the planet the Sun perfects most often, and both facts come out of the same 28 degrees.
Cazimi Sounds Rare Because It Was Defined to Be
Here is a check I did not expect to be so clean. Take each planet's cazimi share and divide it by its combust share:
- Mars — 1 in 30.00
- Jupiter — 1 in 29.98
- Saturn — 1 in 30.03
- Venus — 1 in 30.10
- Mercury — 1 in 30.73
Seventeen arcminutes divided into 8.5 degrees is exactly one in 30. Every planet obeys it. That is not a discovery about the sky — it is arithmetic showing through. Near a conjunction a planet's relative speed barely changes, so the time it spends inside a narrow window is proportional to the window's width, and cazimi is a thirtieth as wide as combustion. Cazimi is rare because somebody chose 17 arcminutes.
Mercury is the only one that misses, by 2.37%. That miss is the interesting part. It means Mercury is the one planet that speeds up measurably across a mere 8.5° — its apparent motion swings from −1.38° to +2.20° a day — so it clears the hairline slightly faster than a constant-speed model predicts. The deviation is a measurement of Mercury's acceleration, taken sideways.
Practical consequence: a Mercury cazimi at an inferior conjunction lasts between 5.66 and 8.97 hours, and at a superior conjunction between 10.92 and 24.50 hours. If you were born under one, the hour on your birth certificate is not a nicety. It is the whole finding.
Two in Five Retrograde Mercuries Are Also Burning
Natal Mercury retrograde gets a lot of attention and almost all of it is delivered in isolation. 19.17% of birth dates carry it — against 9.54% for Mars and 7.20% for Venus, both measured the same way on the Mars sign calculator and the Venus sign calculator. So Mercury is the personal-planet retrograde you are most likely to have, by a wide margin.
What no report tells you is that the two conditions overlap heavily, and not by accident. A retrograde has to contain an inferior conjunction — that is what a retrograde is, Earth overtaking Mercury on the inside — so a retrograde Mercury always spends part of its backward run buried in the Sun. Measured across the century:
- 40.94% of retrograde-Mercury births are also combust
- 31.37% of combust-Mercury births are also retrograde
- only 3.86% of everyone has a retrograde Mercury that is free of the beams
That last figure matters because it is the rarest ordinary combination on the page, and it is the one people mean when they describe a natal Mercury retrograde as producing an unusual, sideways, genuinely original thinker. The backward motion out in clear sky is a different animal from the backward motion inside the fire, and lumping them together is why natal retrograde readings contradict each other so cheerfully.
Worth keeping separate from all of this: the Mercury retrograde tracker covers the transiting cycle, the three-week windows that come round three or four times a year. That is weather. What this page reports is climate — a permanent feature of your chart that does not station direct in a fortnight.
Mercury Never Turns Around Inside the Fire
Sort every birth date by condition and by motion and you get twelve possible cells. Ten of them are occupied. Two are empty, and they are empty for a structural reason rather than for want of looking.
Traditional tables score a planet as swift in motion when it exceeds its own mean daily travel and slow in motionwhen it falls below it. Mercury's mean is 59 arcminutes a day — the same as the Sun's, necessarily, since a planet that can never wander more than 28° from the Sun has to cover exactly the same ground over the long run. I checked that against the ephemeris across 630 whole synodic cycles: Mercury travelled 35,978.8354° and the Sun travelled 35,978.8354°, agreeing to the last decimal place I printed.
Mercury only drops below that mean on the ramp into or out of a station. And across the 631 stations between 1930 and 2029, every single one occurred at an elongation between 14.55° and 21.83° — always well outside the 8.5° burn. So:
- A combust Mercury is never slow. Not rarely. Never.
- A cazimi Mercury is never slow either, for the same reason.
- Mercury always begins and ends a retrograde out in open sky, and does the burned portion in the middle.
This is useful when you are checking someone else's chart reading. If a report tells you Mercury was combust and slow in motion, the report is wrong, and you now know that without recalculating anything.

Your Odds of a Burned Mercury Depend on Your Birth Month
Combustion is not spread evenly around the year. Grouped by Sun sign, the rate runs from 21.86% for Gemini to 28.97% for Scorpio — a 1.33× spread, which is far too large to be noise across 36,525 dates.
The cause is Mercury's orbit, which is the most lopsided of any planet's. At perihelion Mercury sits close enough to the Sun that its greatest elongation shrinks to about 18°; at aphelion it stretches to nearly 28°. A cycle with a small maximum spends proportionally more of itself inside the burn.
That is a story, so I tested it rather than asserting it. Mean greatest elongation by Sun sign runs from 23.76° (Gemini) down to 20.75° (Sagittarius), and ranking the twelve signs by elongation against ranking them by combustion rate gives a Spearman correlation of −0.979. Near-perfect inverse. The smaller the loop, the more of it burns.
Then the part I did not anticipate. That pattern is pinned to Mercury's perihelion, which sits at a fixed point in space, while the tropical zodiac slides backwards under it at the rate of the equinoxes. So the peak drifts. Measured over four thousand years, the spread magnitude barely moves — 1.315×, 1.322×, 1.321×, 1.324×, 1.333× — but the sign it points at travels 1.53° a century, a complete circuit of the zodiac in roughly 23,600 years.
Which makes this a third kind of unevenness, and the contrast with its two siblings is the point. Venus's uneven sign shares are a cohort effect that dissolves once you widen the window past the people currently alive. Mars's are permanent, locked to its orbit. Mercury's is neither: the shape is permanent and the address rotates. Scorpio holds the record now. In a few thousand years it will be somebody else's, and nothing about Scorpio will have changed.
Reading the Chart This Page Loads With
The tool opens on 23 August 1958, 16:15 at UTC+1, and that date was chosen because it fires every branch on the page at once. It is a retrograde cazimi, which is 0.249% of births — about one in four hundred.
Mercury and the Sun met at 15:12 UT that afternoon, both sitting on 29°59' Leo. One arcminute short of Virgo. And the day is a small piece of choreography around that moment: Mercury, running backwards at 0.88° a day, retreated out of Virgo into Leo at 14:34, and the Sun crossed the other way into Virgo at 15:46. The conjunction happens in the 72-minute gap while they are briefly in the same sign.
Which means one calendar day contains all three of the possible Sun-to-Mercury relationships. At midnight UT, Mercury is at 0°32' Virgo and the Sun at 29°22' Leo, so Mercury is a sign ahead. By late evening Mercury is at 29°39' Leo and the Sun at 0°20' Virgo, so Mercury is a sign behind. In between, for a few minutes, they share a degree.
The cazimi window ran from 11:31 to 18:53 UT — 7.37 hours, comfortably inside the 5.66-to-8.97-hour range that inferior conjunctions produce. The wider burn ran from 18 August to 28 August, nine and a half days. Mercury had stationed retrograde on 9 August at 7°42' Virgo and would station direct on 2 September at 24°41' Leo.
A birth at 16:15 local lands 3 minutes after the exact conjunction. Move it to the morning and you lose the cazimi and gain an ordinary combust Mercury in Virgo; move it to the night and you lose the cazimi, gain a combust Mercury in Leo, and the Sun sign changes too. Same date, three different readings, decided by the hour. That is the case for asking for a birth time on a page that otherwise does not need one.
What to Actually Do With a Burned Mercury
Start by not treating it as damage. A quarter of the population is not defective, and the medieval framing — the planet is destroyed, its significations ruined — was written by people describing visibility in a sky, not cognitive ability in a person. What combustion describes well is a mind that is difficult to separate from its owner's sense of self. The thinking is not weaker. It is less independent.
The practical version: a burned Mercury has trouble telling the difference between “I have concluded this” and “I am this.” Disagreement lands as a personal matter because, structurally, it is one. The useful habit is external — writing the position down, sleeping on it, letting somebody else state your case back to you. Anything that puts distance between the idea and the identity does the work the sky did not do.
Cazimi is the reverse and it is worth being specific about what it is not. It does not make you clever. What it seems to describe is someone whose thinking and whose sense of purpose are the same instrument — which is enormously powerful when they are pointed at something real and fairly bleak when they are not. There is no version of cazimi where the two run separately.
Two limits on all of this, stated plainly. Combustion is a longitude difference, so it says nothing about houses or angles — for those you need a birth place, and the full birth chart calculator is the right tool. And the whole framework assumes 8.5° and 17 arcminutes are the right thresholds. They are the standard ones, inherited from the classical dignity tables, and sources disagree by a degree or two either way. A Mercury sitting at 8.4° is not in a different universe from one at 8.6°. Read the number on the tool, not just the label above it.
