Your Bodygraph Is Two Charts, and the Second One Is Where Free Tools Break
A Human Design chart is built from two moments, not one. The first is your birth. The second is the instant the Sun sat exactly 88 degrees of ecliptic longitude behind where it was when you arrived. Thirteen bodies get read at each moment, which gives 26 activations, and those 26 numbers determine everything the system will ever tell you about yourself. Nothing else goes in. No houses, no aspects, no rising sign — the whole bodygraph falls out of 26 positions on a wheel of 64.
What the Machine Actually Does With Your Birth Time
The wheel is the part worth understanding, because everything downstream is bookkeeping. Three hundred and sixty degrees divided by 64 gives 5.625 degrees per gate, and each gate splits into six lines of 0.9375 degrees. The 64 come from the I Ching, and they are not sprinkled around the zodiac at random: gates sitting opposite each other on the wheel are always hexagram complements, the same figure with every line flipped. Gate 1 faces Gate 2. Gate 63 faces Gate 64. All 32 pairs hold, which is how the gate order on this page was checked rather than copied on faith.
The wheel is also offset from the zodiac. It is anchored so that Gate 41 opens at 2°00′ Aquarius — the point Human Design calls the Rave New Year, around 22 January — which drops Gate 25 across the spring equinox and opens Gate 17 at 3°52′30″ Aries. Because 5.625 does not divide 30, gates straddle sign boundaries constantly. Your Sun can be in Aquarius and in a gate that started in Capricorn.
From there: 26 activations produce a set of gates, gates that complete both ends of one of the 36 channels switch on the two centres that channel joins, and the pattern of switched-on centres produces Type, Authority, Profile and Definition. Average chart carries 19.62 distinct gates, 3.48 defined channels and 4.79 defined centres of nine. That is the whole machine.
88 Degrees Is Not 88 Days, and the Gap Runs to Five
Nearly every explainer you will read says the design chart is taken “about 88 days before birth.” That sentence is a description of an average, and it is fine as a description. It is a disaster as a method.
Earth's orbit is an ellipse, so the Sun's apparent speed runs from 0.9534 degrees a day in early July to 1.0197 in early January. Cover 88 degrees at those speeds and the elapsed time swings hard:

A spread of 5.4 days. Subtract a flat 88 days instead and the design Sun lands anywhere from 1.41 degrees early to 3.85 degrees late. A line is 0.9375 degrees wide, so that error is routinely four lines, and a gate is 5.625 degrees, so it is frequently a whole gate as well. Every one of the thirteen design bodies moves with it, and the design Moon — travelling roughly 13 degrees a day — can end up six gates away from where it belongs.
Ever Been Given a 5/6 Profile? It Doesn't Exist
Here is the cleanest test I know for whether a chart was computed properly, and you can run it on any chart you have ever been given.
Only twelve profiles exist in Human Design: 1/3, 1/4, 2/4, 2/5, 3/5, 3/6, 4/6, 4/1, 5/1, 5/2, 6/2 and 6/3. That list is usually presented as doctrine. It is actually arithmetic. Eighty-eight degrees is 93.87 lines, so the design Sun always sits either 94 or 93 lines behind the personality Sun, which means the design line is always the personality line plus two or plus three. Run that rule over all six lines and out come exactly those twelve pairs, and no others. There is no 5/6 because there cannot be one.
So what happens when a tool computes the design from 88 days? Across 30,000 test charts, it returns a profile that does not exist 74.73% of the time — 4/4, 1/1, 6/1, 2/1, 5/6, all the forbidden pairs, each turning up in roughly two to four per cent of charts. If a calculator has ever handed you one of those, it was not a variant reading. It was broken.

One reader in five getting the wrong Type is not a rounding problem. Type is the entire practical payload of the system — it is the thing that tells you to wait for an invitation or to respond or to inform.
One Planet Slips Four Gates and a Projector Becomes a Generator
The chart loaded in the calculator above is a real worked example, so you can click through every number here. Born 13 February 1978, 08:40, Berlin — Central European Time, since Germany did not bring back summer time until 1980.
The true design moment is 18 November 1977 at 16:59 UT: 86.61 days back, near the shortest the arc ever gets. The chart is a Projector with Splenic authority, a 6/2 profile on a Left Angle cross, and a Split Definition — Ajna, G, Heart, Spleen and Throat defined by four channels: 1–8, 13–33, 17–62 and 26–44.
Now subtract 88 flat days instead. The design moment moves back to 17 November, 1.39 days too early, and design Mercury slides from gate 5 to gate 9. That is it. One body, four gates. But gate 9 sits in the Sacral and gate 52 in the Root, and design Jupiter is already parked on 52 — so the channel 9–52 completes, the Sacral switches on, and the chart is now a Generator with Sacral authority whose profile reads 6/1, a profile that does not exist.
Projector to Generator is the most consequential error the system can make. One says wait to be invited and conserve energy you do not have. The other says you have sustainable energy and should respond to what shows up. Follow the wrong one for a decade and Human Design would call the result bitterness or frustration; most people would just call it burnout.
Your Type Is Decided by a Single Centre Out of Nine
People spend a long time studying all nine centres before realising that eight of them have no vote on Type whatsoever. The Sacral does. If it is defined you are a Generator or a Manifesting Generator; if it is open you are a Projector, a Manifestor or a Reflector. Everything else only decides which.
The Sacral is defined in 67.32% of charts. Generators plus Manifesting Generators come to 67.32%. Those are not two findings that happen to agree — they are the same number, because the definition is the rule.

One correction while we are here, because everybody makes this assumption: a Reflector is not somebody with an empty chart. Reflectors carry between 12 and 22 of the 64 gates, averaging 17.84 against 19.64 for everybody else — barely two gates fewer. What makes a Reflector is that no two of their gates happen to be the two ends of the same channel. It is a question of which gates, not how many, and it works out at roughly one person in 98.
Why Almost Nobody Has a Defined Head Centre
Open centres get treated as though the system has singled you out — no defined Head means something about your relationship with inspiration, no defined Heart means something about willpower. Before reaching for meaning, look at the plumbing. A centre switches on when a channel attached to it completes, so the odds are set by how many channels attach to it.

Read the last two columns together and the ranking is almost perfectly monotonic. The Head is open for seven people in ten because only three channels can ever define it, not because humanity has a collective problem with inspiration. The Heart is open for six in ten for the same reason. When a reader tells you an open Heart is common, that is true, and the cause is that the Heart has four channels while the Throat has thirteen.
The same arithmetic explains Authority. Emotional authority sits at the top of the hierarchy, so it is claimed by anyone with a defined Solar Plexus — 52.34% of charts, which is exactly the Solar Plexus definition rate. Sacral authority takes 31.44%, Splenic 9.11%, and the remaining five kinds share under 7% between them. If your authority is Ego Projected you are in the rarest 0.56%, and you will find almost nothing written for you.
3/5 Is Seven Times Commoner Than 3/6, and That's Geometry
The twelve profiles are usually laid out as a neat grid, as if you had a one-in-twelve chance of each. You do not. Six of them take about 14% each and the other six take about 2%.

The cause is that 93.87 lines is 93 point eight-seven. The design Sun lands 94 lines back whenever the personality Sun sits in the first 86.67% of its line, and 93 lines back only in the last 13.33%. Theory says the split should be 86.67 / 13.33; measurement over 30,000 charts says 86.60 / 13.40. That agreement is the reason to trust the number rather than the internet's tidy grid.
The same fraction drives the Incarnation Cross angle: Right Angle 64.37%, Left Angle 33.24%, and Juxtaposition — which is only ever the 4/1 profile — at 2.39%.
Your Profile Changes at Some Point on Every Single Day
Not usually. Not often. Every day, without exception, and it is provable rather than measured. The Sun's slowest daily motion is 0.9534 degrees, around 10 July. One line is 0.9375 degrees. The slowest day the Sun ever has still covers 1.017 lines, so the personality Sun crosses a line boundary in every 24-hour period there is. So does the design Sun, 88 degrees behind it, and the two rarely cross at the same hour. The upshot is that no birth date carries fewer than three profiles: 91.14% of dates produce exactly three across the 24 hours and the other 8.86% produce four. Two people born the same date in the same hospital do not just risk different profiles — one of them is nearly guaranteed.
That makes Human Design considerably more birth-time sensitive than a natal chart, where nine of ten planets hold their sign all day. Across 900 test dates:
- 23 minutes — median wait before one of the 26 activations moves to a new gate or line
- 100% of dates carry at least three profiles across the 24 hours
- 80.33% carry more than one set of defined centres
- 38.11% carry more than one Type
- 30.00% carry more than one Authority
The Berlin chart above has 55 minutes of slack, and that same date in Berlin produces both Projectors and Manifesting Generators depending on the hour. So if your birth time comes from a family story rather than a document, treat the Type as provisional and run the neighbouring hours. If you have no birth time at all, Human Design cannot help you and will not admit it — that is the point at which the big three calculator for an unknown birth time is the honest tool, because it is built to say which parts survive the uncertainty.
Start With Strategy, Not With Your Gate List
The gates are the most seductive part of a bodygraph and the least useful place to begin. You have around 19 or 20 of them, each with a name and a paragraph, and reading all twenty produces a horoscope-shaped blur where everything sounds a bit true. The two lines that actually do work are Type and Authority, because they are behavioural instructions rather than descriptions — wait to respond, wait for the invitation, sleep on it, trust the sound your gut made before your brain caught up.
One honest caveat. Everything on this page up to and including your Type is arithmetic: longitudes, arcs, gate boundaries, a graph-connectivity test. Any two correct tools must agree exactly, which is why the disagreements documented above are bugs and not differences of opinion. Whether the resulting label describes anything real about you is a different kind of claim entirely, and this calculator does not make it. Human Design has been assembled from the I Ching, the chakra system, the Kabbalistic Tree of Life and astrology, and it is barely forty years old.
Use it the way you would use any lens: check whether the instruction changes anything when you follow it for a month.
