Three Answers to One Question: Tropical, Sidereal and the Real Sky
A sidereal birth chart calculator takes your tropical positions and subtracts one number from all of them. That is the entire operation. The number is called the ayanamsa, it is currently about 24°, and because it is subtracted from every longitude at once, most of what you think it changes it cannot change at all. What it does change, it changes completely — roughly four birthdays in five come back with a different Sun sign.

Your Chart Has Three Legitimate Answers
Ask where the Sun was when you were born and there are three defensible replies, not two. The tropical zodiac answers "30° past the March equinox". The sidereal zodiac answers "30° past a fixed point among the stars". And the sky itself answers with a constellation, which is neither of those and obeys neither of their rules. The calculator above prints all three because the honest answer to "what sign am I really" is that the question contains a hidden choice.

Two Very Different Things Are Called Sidereal
This is the confusion that sends people looking for a second opinion. When a Jyotishi or a Western sidereal astrologer says "sidereal", they mean row two: twelve equal 30° signs, rotated back so the zodiac tracks the stars instead of the seasons. When a science journalist says "the real sidereal sky", they mean row three: the actual constellations, which are thirteen and enormously uneven.
Those two are not the same claim, and calling both of them "the true sky" is where the arguments start. The sidereal zodiac is not a map of the constellations. It is the tropical zodiac with a constant taken off it, and it keeps every one of the tropical zodiac's tidy fictions — twelve slices, all identical, no Ophiuchus.
How Close Does Each One Get to the Actual Sky?
That is a measurable question, so I measured it. For each of the 36,525 days between 1930 and 2029 I asked whether the label a system hands you matches the constellation the Sun is genuinely in front of. The tropical zodiac gets it right 12.6% of the time. The Lahiri sidereal zodiac gets it right 79.7%.
The tropical figure is the control, and the argument falls apart without it. Printed alone, 79.7% looks like a failure — one date in five mislabelled. Printed beside 12.6%, it is a six-fold improvement, and it settles the underlying dispute cleanly: sidereal really is closer to the sky, and tropical really was never trying to be. Two details make the point sharper. The tropical label is right for precisely 0.00% of dates when the answer is Libra, Scorpius or Ophiuchus, and for 0.41% when it is Gemini. It is not slightly off; for those stretches of the year it is never correct.
Rotating the Zodiac Can Only Buy You So Much
If the sidereal zodiac is closer, why not tune the offset until it is perfect? I tried. Brute-forcing every possible rotation from 0° to 360° in twentieth-of-a-degree steps, the best a twelve-sign zodiac can ever do is 82.42%, at an offset of 27.4°. Lahiri already scores 79.7%. The perfect ayanamsa would gain you 2.72 percentage points and then stop dead.
It stops because the remaining error is not rotational. Ophiuchus makes 5.03% of dates unmatchable by any twelve-sign system whatsoever — there is no slot to put them in — so the ceiling for the entire approach is 94.97%, and Lahiri reaches 83.92% of that ceiling. The rest is width. Of everything sidereal gets wrong, 24.79% is Ophiuchus and 75.21% is simply that the real constellations are not 30° wide. You cannot fix uneven boxes by sliding all of them sideways together.
The Argument Everyone Has Is About the Small Number
Search any astrology forum for "which ayanamsa" and you will find people genuinely angry about it. Lahiri, Fagan–Bradley, Krishnamurti and Raman all share the same precession rate, so each differs from the others by a fixed constant that never changes — I checked it across the whole century and it holds to sixteen decimal places. The full spread between the four is 2.2730°.
A constant of d degrees moves a sign boundary for exactly d/30 of the ecliptic, so the entire debate decides the Sun sign for 7.58% of birth dates. Lahiri against Krishnamurti is 0.31%. Meanwhile the equal-versus-real choice from the section above rewrites the answer for the large majority. The loud argument is about the small knob, which is usually a sign that everyone already agrees about the big one.
None of which means it never matters to you. If a planet sits within a couple of degrees of a boundary, the school your calculator happens to use decides its sign, and the tool above flags exactly which of your bodies are in that position.
What Survives the Conversion, and What Breaks
Now the part that the "your sign changes!" headlines never reach. Subtracting one constant from every longitude is a rigid rotation, and a rigid rotation cannot alter any quantity that was a difference to begin with.
An aspect is the angle between two planets. Take 24° off both and the angle is untouched. Across 900,000 planet pairs from 20,000 charts, the conversion changed exactly zero aspects — not almost none, zero, and it could not have been otherwise. Quadrant house systems behave the same way, because their cusps are longitudes that rotate along with everything else: Placidus placements came back 0 changed out of 200,000. Whichever way you feel about the sidereal zodiac, your Venus–Mars square and your Placidus tenth house are coming with you.
Whole-Sign Houses Are the Hidden Casualty
There is one exception, and it is the one that matters most, because it lands squarely on the tradition that actually uses the sidereal zodiac. Whole-sign houses are not measured from a cusp — house one isthe Ascendant's sign, house two is the next sign, and so on. That makes a whole-sign house a lookup rather than a difference, and lookups do not survive the rotation intact.
A planet drops back a sign only if its degree within that sign is less than the ayanamsa. Your Ascendant follows the same rule, independently. When one crosses and the other doesn't, the house changes. That predicts a rate of 33.67% from arithmetic alone, and over 20,000 real charts the measured figure is 33.71% — 92.83% of charts had at least one planet move, averaging 3.37 of the ten. Where Ophiuchus Actually Shows Up
Ophiuchus surfaces every few years as a headline and gets swatted down as a hoax, and both sides are half right. It is genuinely a constellation the Sun crosses, for about nineteen days each year. It is genuinely not a zodiac sign, because the zodiac was never a constellation list — a point the astronomy versus astrology guide takes apart properly.
What nobody mentions is how often it turns up in a full chart. Only 5.03% of people have the Sun there, but run all ten planets and 42.94% of charts have at least one body in Ophiuchus. Nearly half. Here is what the sky is really divided into:

The thirteen spans add to 360.00°, which is the check that the table is sound. Virgo is 6.67 times the width of Scorpius, and the Sun crosses Scorpius in about six days. If the constellations really did set the signs, birthdays would not be spread 1.79% to 12.19% — a 6.81× spread — they would be even. That unevenness is the strongest practical argument for equal signs that exists, and it is rarely the one people reach for.
Picking a System Without Kidding Yourself
Use tropical if you are reading Western astrology, because every interpretation you will ever read against it was written for seasonal signs. Use sidereal if you are reading Jyotish or Western sidereal, and then use the ayanamsa your source uses — Lahiri for Indian material, Fagan–Bradley for Western sidereal. Treat the constellation column as astronomy, which is what it is.
What you should not do is treat the third column as a verdict on the first two. The tropical zodiac is not a failed attempt at constellation-spotting that drifted; it was built on the equinox deliberately and has never claimed otherwise. Precession is documented in detail by the standard reference on axial precession, and none of it is a secret anybody has been keeping. There is a fourth way to read the same sky, and it swaps regions for points: instead of asking which constellation a planet falls inside, ask which individual star it lines up with. The London Chart Loaded on This Page
The default is 26 November 1991, 08:30 in London, and it is there because it fires every argument above at once. British Summer Time had ended on 27 October that year, so the summer-time box stays unticked.
The Sun reads Sagittarius 3°35′ tropical and Scorpio 9°50′ sidereal — and the sky says Scorpius, the 6.6° constellation only 1.79% of birthdays land in. Across all eleven points, the tropical column matches the sky zero times and the sidereal column matches it eight. Mercury is the showpiece: Lahiri puts it at Sagittarius 0°01′, one arcminute inside the sign, while Fagan–Bradley drags it back to Scorpio 29°08′. One arcminute decides its sign, and the sky ignores the argument entirely, because Mercury is actually in Ophiuchus — as is the Ascendant.
Then the invariance panel: zero aspects changed, zero Placidus placements changed, and two whole-sign houses moved. Even the two sidereal misses are instructive, because they fail for different reasons. Mercury misses because Ophiuchus exists and no zodiac can name it. Mars misses because it sits at Scorpio 4°19′ sidereal while the actual constellation underneath it is still Libra — the unequal-width problem, on one planet, in one chart.
