Coordinates that expired inside living memory

  • Alcyone left Taurus for Gemini on 14 September 2000 — after your birth, so your chart still uses the old sign.
  • Mirach left Aries for Taurus on 13 August 1970 — before your birth, so any list older than that has it in the wrong sign for you.
  • Check: Regulus, which is not a starseed star but does have a widely published ingress, comes out of this engine at 29 November 2011 against the published 28 November 2011.

How This Works

  1. 1.Each of the fourteen stars starts as the right ascension and declination its catalogue publishes. Proper motion carries it forward to your birth year — Arcturus alone shifts about 3.3 arcminutes a century under its own steam.
  2. 2.Those coordinates are rotated into ecliptic longitude and latitude, then precessed from J2000 to your date. Precession runs 1.378° to 1.402° per century depending on how far the star sits from the ecliptic, so there is no single rate to shortcut with.
  3. 3.Nutation and annual aberration turn the mean place into an apparent one. This step is worth up to 37 arcseconds and it is why the Regulus ingress here lands within a day of the published date instead of four months late.
  4. 4.Your ten planets, Ascendant and Midheaven are compared against each star's longitude. Anything inside the orb is a contact, and its true great-circle separation is computed alongside so you can see what the longitude match is hiding.
  5. 5.The same test then runs 120 more times against star catalogues rotated to meaningless longitudes. If your real count is not clearly better than theirs, the contacts are telling you about the orb rather than about you.

Where the Starseed Stars Actually Are, and What Sits Next to Them

A starseed birth chart reading landed in my inbox last spring with the Pleiades marked at 29° Taurus, three exclamation marks, and a paragraph about Alcyone lighting up the reader's Venus. Trouble is, Alcyone hasn't been in Taurus since 14 September 2000. Nobody had lied. Somebody had copied a table, and the table had quietly gone stale, the way tables do when the thing they describe keeps moving.

That is the whole problem with starseed astrology in one screenshot. The star systems are real. Their positions are real numbers anybody can look up. Almost nobody working in this corner of astrology ever looks them up.

Where Are the Pleiades Right Now?

A fixed star has a catalogue entry — a right ascension and a declination, plus a proper motion telling you how fast it drifts under its own steam. Convert those to ecliptic coordinates and you get two numbers. The longitude is the degree of the zodiac the star projects onto. The latitude is how far above or below the ecliptic it actually sits. Astrology uses the first and almost never mentions the second.

The calculator above does both. It runs the fourteen stars the starseed literature names, carries each one forward by proper motion, precesses it to your birth date, then applies nutation and annual aberration so the star is compared against your planets on the same footing. That last step sounds fussy. It moves the answer by up to 37 arcseconds, which is nearly three years of drift, and getting it wrong is the difference between putting the Regulus ingress in November 2011 where it belongs and putting it in April 2012 where it doesn't.

The 29° Taurus Everyone Quotes Expired in 2000

The Earth's axis wobbles like a slowing top, one full circuit every 25,800 years or so. Astronomers call it axial precession, and its practical effect is that the tropical zodiac slides forward against the stars at roughly 50 arcseconds a year. Over a human lifetime that's about a degree and a half. Over the century a birth-chart calculator has to cover, it's enough to walk a star out of one sign and into the next.

Two of the fourteen do exactly that inside the 1930–2029 window. Mirach crossed from Aries into Taurus on 13 August 1970, and Alcyone crossed from Taurus into Gemini on 14 September 2000. So a checklist announcing that "Pleiadian markings show up around 29° Taurus" was right for anyone born before the millennium and points at the wrong sign for everyone born after it. Nothing about the doctrine changed. The sky just kept going.

This is the same drift that gives the sidereal birth chart its whole reason to exist, and the same one behind the periodic "NASA changed the zodiac" headline. The difference is that a sign boundary is an abstraction, so nobody can check it. A star is an object with coordinates, so anybody can.

Can Anything Actually Sit Next to Sirius?

No. Not your Sun, not your Moon, not anything. Sirius sits 39.6° below the ecliptic, and the planets never wander more than a few degrees off it. When a program tells you Venus is conjunct Sirius, it means the two share a longitude — that if you dropped a plumb line from Sirius straight down to the ecliptic, it would land near Venus. In the sky they are most of a right angle apart.

Across 12,000 test charts the true separation of these longitude-conjunctions averaged 34.6°. Only 6.5% came within 5° of each other and 78.8% were more than 20° apart. Of the fourteen stars, exactly 1 — Alcyone — sits close enough to the ecliptic to ever appear beside a planet. Vega is 61.7° up. Polaris is 66.1° up and parked over the Earth's axis, where from the northern hemisphere it never rises and never sets. A Polaris conjunction is a shadow falling on a degree.

Whether that matters is a question about what you think a conjunction is. If it's a symbolic coincidence of coordinates, latitude is irrelevant. If it's two lights meeting, latitude is the entire story. Astrology has always had bodies that stray off the ecliptic — Juno leaves the eight-degree zodiac belt for more than half its orbit — but Juno at least comes back. These stars never do.

Why the Old Astrologers Picked Different Stars

Here's the part I find genuinely interesting. Western astrology has used fixed stars for two thousand years, and it settled on a shortlist: the four Royal Stars of Persia, plus the Behenian fifteen of the medieval magicians. Set that shortlist beside the starseed one and the two are obviously chosen on different criteria.

A ratio of 3.62. Only 1 of the fourteen starseed stars sits inside the zodiac's own 8° belt; 4 of the six traditional ones do. The old astrologers were picking stars that planets could actually visit, because they were watching the sky and reporting what they saw meet. The starseed list is picking stars you can name from a suburban back garden — the brightest, the most famous, the ones with mythology attached. Both are defensible selection rules. Only one of them produces conjunctions you could photograph.

How Many Markings Does an Ordinary Chart Score?

Four. That's the median on the ten-item checklist the starseed sites circulate, measured over 12,000 charts spread across 1930–2029 and 74 cities. The mean is 4.44. 99.91% of people score at least one and 91.1% score three or more. Exactly 0.09% score nothing at all, and in the whole sample nobody scored more than 9.

Look at the individual rates in the tool and you can see why. Four of the ten items sit between 60% and 68% on their own — an outer planet aspecting one of your lights, a stellium somewhere, a planet in the 12th. These aren't rare configurations spotted by a discerning eye. They're the ordinary furniture of a birth chart, which is exactly what makes them useful to a list that wants to say yes.

Run the Same Test With a List I Invented

A high score means nothing until you know what a meaningless list would score. So I built one: the same ten geometries with every ingredient swapped for an equally arbitrary alternative. Saturn instead of Uranus. The 6th house instead of the 12th. Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn instead of Sagittarius, Aquarius and Pisces. Fourteen randomly chosen degrees instead of fourteen stars.

On the eight items where the two forms are genuinely comparable, the invented list scores 4.11 against the real list's 4.20 — a ratio of 1.023. Across all ten the invented list scores higher, 5.42 against 4.44, because two of its geometries happen to be commoner. That control runs live in the calculator on your own chart, and it's the single most useful thing on this page.

One thing I expected and got wrong: I assumed the checklist would be generational, since four of its items lean on the slow outer planets. It isn't. Two people born the same year agree marking-for-marking 61.0% of the time against 60.2% for births twenty-five years apart, which is no difference worth the name. A Neptune-to-Sun aspect depends on where the Sun is, and the Sun goes round every year. The element balance calculator hit the same wall testing its own cohort hypothesis and reported the same negative.

There is a sharp exception, and it says exactly where the cohort effect does live. Score a chart by the sign a slow body occupies rather than by an aspect or a house, and the same test flips: two people born the same year share a Neptune sign 95.73% of the time and a Saturn sign 81.21%, against 8.44% for Sun signs. The past life birth chart calculator runs that split across the karmic indicator set. Checklists survive the cohort test because their items are angles and houses; sign-based readings do not.

Nine of the Fourteen Stars Are Out of Reach

The star half of the doctrine behaves the opposite way, and this is where it gets strange. Neptune takes 165 years to circle the zodiac and Pluto 248, so neither finishes a lap inside a single human century. Across 1930–2029 Neptune touches 61.7% of the ecliptic and Pluto 56.7%. Uranus, at 84 years, manages the whole thing.

The stretch neither Neptune nor Pluto reaches happens to hold Alcyone, Sirius, Polaris, Alpheratz, Mirach, Procyon and all three stars of Orion's belt — 9 of the fourteen. So "Neptune conjunct the Pleiades" isn't rare for people alive today. It's impossible, and it stays impossible for centuries. Score the same stars using only the outer planets and the per-star hit rate spreads 6.44×; score them using the personal bodies and the angles, which do lap the zodiac every year, and it flattens to 1.17×. That second number is the control, and without it the first reads like a fact about the stars instead of a fact about the calendar.

Widen the Orb and Everybody Qualifies

The count of contacts isn't a discovery. It's a setting. Twelve points, fourteen stars, and a window of twice the orb out of 360 degrees gives an expected count of exactly 12 × 14× 2w ÷ 360 — a straight line through the origin. Measured against predicted, at 1° it's 0.86 against 0.93; at 3° it's 2.63 against 2.80.

Which means the share of people carrying "a starseed marking" is whatever the person who wrote the calculator decided it should be. At 1° it's 55.9%. At 2°, 81.6%. At 6°, 99.4%. And at 12.86° the fourteen stars tile the entire ecliptic edge to edge, every point in every chart is conjunct something, and the reading describes every human being who has ever lived. Traditional fixed-star practice sticks to a degree or less. Now you know why.

What to Do With a Contact That Is Actually Tight

None of this makes the stars uninteresting. It makes the leap from a shared longitude to a soul origin unsupportable, which is a much narrower claim. If you have a contact inside half a degree — and 33.6% of people do — you have something worth sitting with, in the way traditional astrologers used fixed stars: as a note of character, not a passport.

Three rules I'd hold to. Read tight contacts only, because a 3° orb is a conversation with your own settings rather than with the sky. Prefer contacts to the Sun, Moon, Ascendant or Midheaven, since those are the points the tradition rated and the rest is noise at this resolution. And check the sky column — if the star is thirty degrees off the ecliptic, whatever you're reading is symbolic rather than observational, and it's more honest to say so out loud. If you want the version of this technique that survives real scrutiny, look up parans: a star rising, setting or culminating at the moment of birth, which needs your latitude and is far harder to qualify for. Boston, Two Minutes to Nine

The chart loaded on this page belongs to somebody born in Boston on 20 May 1970 at 20:58, with Eastern Daylight Time in force. It's the best single illustration of everything above that I could find, and it's worth walking through because it cuts both ways.

Its Sun sits at 29°34′ Taurus. Alcyone, that night, sat at 29°34′ Taurus. That's a six-arcsecond conjunction with the brightest of the Pleiades — the textbook Pleiadian marking, as exact as the technique can get, and the star is close enough to the ecliptic that the pairing is real rather than projected. Seven contacts in total at a 2° orb against a population mean of 1.76, and not one of the 120 invented catalogues manages seven. This chart genuinely is unusual, and the page says so.

Then look at the second row. Venus at 28°08′ Gemini, one arcminute from Polaris — a tighter orb than most readings ever print, on a star 66.1° above the ecliptic that from Boston never sets. Two hundredths of a degree separate the chart's best contact from its second best, and one says Pleiadian while the other says Polarian. The origin a calculator hands you is decided by a margin smaller than the disagreement between two ephemerides.

Two more things this chart demonstrates by accident. Mirach was sitting at 29°59′ Aries that night — one arcminute from Taurus, eighty-five days before it crossed for good, so a list printed in 1969 and a list printed in 1971 disagree about which sign it holds. And untick the summer-time box: the star contacts don't move at all, while the checklist drops from eight markings to six, because two of its items are house-based and the houses swing a full sign. Star contacts are robust to a wrong birth time. Checklists are not. If a reading is going to be wrong, that's usually where it goes wrong.

Precession slides a star forward by about 1.4 degrees a century, and Alcyone, the brightest of the Pleiades, crossed out of Taurus on 14 September 2000. The 29 Taurus number was correct when somebody wrote it down, and it has been copied ever since. This calculator works out where the star was on your own birth date rather than quoting a table.

Tighter is better, and the arithmetic shows why. The number of contacts is 12 points times 14 stars times twice the orb over 360, so it rises in a straight line with whatever orb you pick. At 1 degree 55.9% of people have a contact, at 3 degrees 91.8%, and at 12.86 degrees the fourteen stars cover the whole ecliptic and everyone qualifies for everything. Traditional fixed-star practice uses 1 degree or less for exactly this reason.
Because Neptune has not been there in your lifetime. Across 1930 to 2029 Neptune only covers 61.7% of the ecliptic and Pluto 56.7%, and the whole Taurus-Gemini stretch that holds Alcyone, Sirius, Polaris and the three Orion belt stars falls outside both. Nine of the fourteen starseed stars are out of reach of Neptune and Pluto for every living person, which means any origin a checklist assigns you through those two planets depends on the century you were born in.
Only if a contact involves your Ascendant or Midheaven. Planetary longitudes are identical seen from anywhere on Earth, so a Sun or Mars contact barely moves — at plus or minus an hour, 93.6% of the rows that changed were angle rows and only 5% were the Moon. The house-based items on the checklist are a different story: the sample chart loaded here scores 8 markings with the summer-time box ticked and 6 with it unticked, while its star contacts do not change at all.
That question does not have an answer this method can give, and the chart loaded on this page shows why. Its tightest contact is the Sun on Alcyone at 6 arcseconds and its second tightest is Venus on Polaris at 1 arcminute — one says Pleiadian, the other says Polarian, and they are separated by two hundredths of a degree. Whichever origin a calculator prints, it picked it by a margin far smaller than the disagreement between two ephemerides.
The stars are, and their positions are real numbers you can check. What does not survive is the leap from a shared longitude to a soul origin, because the same test run with an invented star catalogue produces just as many hits — this page runs 120 of them live so you can see it. Use the contact list the way traditional astrologers used fixed stars: a handful of tight contacts, read as character rather than as ancestry.
